Charities Challenge – Who are Beijing Biddies fundraising for?

As you will have seen from our profiles, we have many reasons to support two inspirational charities. We have taken on this challenge to raise £150K for Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Cancer Research UK Beijing Biddies ChallengeCancer Research UK is making headway every day into beating cancer, and I (Edwina) have been affected directly by the amazing work that they do.

Deby and Edwina

My daughter Deby, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer seven years ago, has been on a successful Neo Tango trial which is allowing her to lead a full life and have a successful career. As you will see from my brief bio, you feel very helpless as a mother when your child is faced with such a fight, and her drive, determination, attitude and focus are an inspiration to us all.

We were given the opportunity to visit the Paterson Institute in Manchester – one of the Cancer Research UK Centres. We were given a lab tour and see for ourselves the tremendous work that is being done, and learn of the progress which has been made over the last 20 years. We also saw Christies Hospital which is on the same site. This is Europe’s finest and largest cancer hospital. It was a very sobering moment as we set foot in this hospital. The money that we raise in our challenge will contribute to research through CRUK that really makes a tangible difference. As everyone knows someone, whether family member or friend, who has been affected by this awful disease, we all know the extraordinary difference that support makes to those who need it.This inspired us to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support as well.

Macmillan Cancer Support Beijing BiddiesCancer is the toughest fight that many people face, and the amazing nurses and therapists at Macmillan Cancer Support are an inspiration. They are there to advise, support and care for people through the terrible trauma of this disease.

So, our aim in setting a challenging target of £150K is to really make a difference. On the one hand, giving a big boost to the charity that does so much to make progress into beating cancer, and on the other, to help Macmillan Cancer Support who provides incredible hands on day-to-day care for those who are so ill, and fighting their own battles.
