What a day to start this challenge! Blue skies and sunshine greeted The Beijing Biddies along with a welcoming crowd of supporters.
There to wave them off were four-year-old Mia Presch, who jumped at the chance to have a ride in a Tuk Tuk, and the Mayor of Carlisle, Councillor Colin Stothard.
Mia is currently undergoing treatment for a Wilm’s Tumour, a form of kidney cancer, but her bright personality and big smile lit up the day.
Councillor Stothard expressed his admiration for the Beijing Biddies team in an interview for the video being made about the Tuk Tuk Challenge and also made a generous donation to their fundraising.
Then it was time to set off and the convoy of two Tuk Tuks and the motorhome attracted plenty of attention as it drove through Carlisle on the first stage of the journey to Edinburgh.
The team arrived at the University of Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre at 15:15 – a lot earlier than they had initially planned – due to the Tuk Tuks managing speeds of 45mph across the journey! They met Dr Ifigeneia Stavrou at the Research Centre to discuss the challenge and its importance in raising funds to help the fight against children’s cancers.
After an exciting and tiring day there were early nights all round in preparation for a 5am start as the team heads to Newcastle for the next stage of the challenge.
